Teaching Comprehension as a Skill

The following is one of the sessions from our 2019 Conference co-hosted by School of the Ozarks and held at the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, MO.

Teaching Comprehension as a Skill

We often teach comprehension as a product, but we should be teaching it as a skill. For example, instead of just teaching sixth graders to merely comprehend Tom Sawyer, we should also be preparing them to understand Plymouth Plantation in ninth grade and Dante’s Divine Comedy in eleventh. In this workshop, we will be learning strategies for comprehension that students will be able to transfer to different subjects and carry with them throughout their lives. Teachers will get to practice the strategies as well as learn tips for teaching them.
